MAAAAANNNNN!

Now that is a place to have a skate camp! Does anyone else feel that the Rodney and the NEx-Gen Shut team are gonna be the first skaters to have a cameo on Entourage… This place even has a Pirate themed skate shop! Fricken SHUT and Pirates…throw in some Jedi’s and Ninjas and the world will beat a path to their door. Seriously though this Skate Camp has attracted the cream of the crop through the years…(Buck-E  L’Sick anyone?)

Nice work Rod, I can now add The Caymans as an archive Category!  hope you are lying in the Sun as we speak! Next year sign me up I can be a guest lecturer; have the first class room setting lessons, teach em all about Bruthahood and Junk!

Peace!

So on July 20th THOS turned three years old. Crazy to think I have been living with this thing that long in two different countries as well. It has been a great year from my vantage point it seems there has been no downturn in the brotherhood sector of the economy. A high water mark is obviously Jim Murphy being recognized for his charitable/skate endeavors but along with that I have my eye on a lot of other seeds that have been planted and people tied to this community seem to be gravitating towards one another with results to follow. So THOS continues on into year 4 – keep the pics and stories flowing and I promise to keep it all moving so no one will ever have time to hang a sign on us.

Cheers, My Bruthas and Sistas!

I have known Greg Taylor for a long time, we both attended Watchung Hills Regional High School together and spent all our extra curricular time at The Barn and various other ramps around NJ. With the exception of an odd weekend when the Dead were in town I cant recall anything that happened back in those days that did not involve Greg. To say we were and are friends is a tremendous understatement we are Bruthas, full stop.  Having transplanted himself to AZ from NJ he has never lost touch (he even flew to NYC to attend one of my art shows) and has always kept people together long before FB was around. I dub him the mental packrat…just ask him about a time or place and he will have the info on lock down for you. He is a true connector in every sense of the word and is a great person to have on your life team. If he recommends a book (Tipping point) give it a read..it will help, if he has a friend (Chris& Mike!) he wants to put you in touch with for any reason…say yes, you will wind up with new and important people in your life.

Greg has been around the block in the Skate industry as well and has come out smiling. If you scan enough skate pics from the 90′s he can be seen lurking around many a platform during many an event.

With photography in my opinion Greg has really come into his own. He has a journalistic, man with a camera style and with his self portraits he has been able to make images of himself with that sense that he is separate from things at the moment…which I believe self portraits should do.

Anyway Greg rules hit him up over on FaceBook and add to his growing fanlist…you never know where it might take you.

When I was traveling for work within skateboarding I was lucky to meet a lot of great photogs and go to cool spots, contests and sessions etc.  Many of the photogs I really looked up to and they were cool with giving me some tips about film, gear whatever.  Guys like Rhino, Swift, Joe Hammeke & J. Grant are so amazing I never thought I could do what they did – so I decided to it differently.  I wanted to capture other people in the shots and not have the skater be the only point of interest.  I tried to let people in this world we either live in or have come from and show them that it’s more than the guy on his board at that moment.

Other info:

Real life occupation: Marketing Strategist

Hometown: Warren, NJ

Lives in: Tempe, AZ (for last 12 years)

If it weren’t for people like Corn, Rocky, Tag, you, Mike P, Weep (RIP) & Craig Blank to set the path of the arts before me – I wouldn’t be doing this stuff.  Thanks to everyone.

Greg

For the last 3 years or so Derek Rinaldi Shut riding force of nature has been THOS’s imbedded reporter and liaison to all things East Coast skate. Well he has been officially pinched from us by Bryce Kanights over at SkateDaily.net and I for one am happy for DR and BK.  I dig DR and everything BK and his partners do over at SD….A rising tide lifts all ships!!

Derek Rinaldi Joins SkateDaily.net
He’s already up and at it, so without any further delay we’d like to properly introduce and welcome our east coast correspondent, Derek Rinaldi to SKATEDAILY.net’s growing news squad. Derek hails from, New Jersey’s deeply rooted skate scene, was a member of the Edison’s “Noside” Posse and is one of NYC’s original SHUT team riders. Importantly, he’s armed with skate history and continues to live and breath skateboarding true east coast style.

Feel free to give him a shout via: derek@skatedaily.net.

Hey Jason

SkateBoarding” Clip
That’s Tag to start. Looks like there a ton of people on the ground watching. Next is Rocky in the White Helmet. He always skated like Cab with that smooth style and crooked neck.  That’s Corn in the blue shirt and yellow helmet.  That’ Jeff Roenning in the white Zorlac shirt and yellow helmet. And I think thats weep sitting on the platform as Rocky chucks an air over his knees.  Next is Corn and Weeps at the Ditch. Corn said it’s the ditch by the highschool but I think it’s the one closer to Bridgewater on 78 East.  I could be wrong. This part kinda chokes me up watching it.  And then there’s the weird Kona part at the end. I know nothing about it.

The second part of the clip is at my ramp again and it’s Tag again.

I’m sure the people that did the original transfer just stuck it together with no rhyme or reason.  My folks still have the original film too.

Classic stuff! That is the ditch on route 78 across from Watchung Hills regional Highschool.

Out the cafeteria (during lunch) and through the woods then it was just a quick  game of Frogger across 78 and you could skate for 15 minutes or so and have time to get back to class. Unless you went with Weep who would take one annoying long 15 minute run and leave you standing there to watch…Commmmmmaaaahhhhhhnnnnn WEEP!! enough already!…great times.

PS. The generic transfer music is too sad.

Thrasher June 1986 Danzig

Jason Oliva

Came across this gem amongst my stuff. (saw one sell for $31 on Ebay)  I only held onto Thrasher number 2, 4 and this one.

Our NJ Devil locked heros The Misfits ruled (past tense!) the only Misfits I know involve Jerry,Googy,Glenn and Doyle. Please ignore their modern controversy.

In the mid 80′s I would take the bus into NYC (Kwan,Weeps and sometime Corn in tow) and go to any and every hotel lobby comicbook convention. We would it all the NYC skate spots  then go shop for toys and comics at the conventions. There was always this old guy peddling monster mags and along with him behind the table was this short Roy Orbison looking dude (thats how we referred to him at least ) who would sell Japanese toys and mags, Astro Boy, Captain Harlock and the such. We ate that stuff up.  A couple years later after reading this issue of Thrasher we realized the Roy Orbison looking dude was actually Glen Danzig, the guy we were being all lippy too was Danzig!! I was worried for my skull, well at least I was a good customer and I thought that would keep me safe. When we saw him again we transformed into worshipping teens, so lame.  Anyway those were great time, Weep actually scored some tix to see him at the Ritz for The Mother video and later Doyle turned up at Tower records and gave us some pen light swag that was used to herald his new band “Doyle”…too funny (still have mine though!)

Normally I dont write this much but today I did.
