570: Episode 006 THOS.TV- Todd Laffler 1988 [En-Jay]
April 23, 2010
Its a Friday so its THOS TV time!
Episode 006: 1988 [En-Jay] Todd Laffler
Todd mastered what it took to be a great street skater back in the 80′s and it was during the 80′s he got his start as a photographer by creating the Epic Tome of 80′s East Coast Skate- Fish*Eye. All that skate photography has led to his current career as a professional photographer. I follow Todd’s blog and regardless of his subject I am always blown away by his photographs…here is an example of his more current skate photography…pretty nuts? right? and how about this past gem of Todd’s work:
Chris “Dune” Pastras by Todd Laffler
Fish*Eye Issue 1 by Todd Laffler, Mike Vallely Cover
….and as Mike V brought his brand of east coast 80′s street style to the world stage via the cover of Thrasher Todd was there alongside the other [En-Jay] rippers contributing to its development it in schoolyards, parking lots and unfinished basements.
I planned on adding some titles such as …Do you remember todd? or just because you are not famous that does not mean you are not great but then I thought sod all that nonsense we have nothing to prove here at THOS…its just one of my favorite videos and I dig watching it…hope you do too.

I am really excited, astonished and slightly nervous by the amount of subscribers THOS TV has and in such a short time as well. Thanks to everyone who is watching. If you want to support the show you can head over to I-tunes and leave a review or rating and in addition if you have anything videos you would like to submit please feel free to contact me.
Cheers

So I just received an email with a video posing the question:
Do you remember the days when an amateur vert contest meant no mctwists? Let alone Christ mctwists! (and Ben Hatchell kills it)
So I thought yeah I do remember those days…and through the power of the intertubes we can all see for ourselves.
One thing I took away from watching the following videos was that the gap between AM and Pro is just as narrow in 2010 as it was in 1986 and consistency wins contests.
Also if you sent Ben Hatchell back in time:
A. Ben Hatchell would have been one of the Bones Brigade and
B. Mike Vallely may not have been noticed re-inventing street skating in the parking lot
I admittedly read too much science fiction…..
PS Ben Hatchell won both 2009 and 2010 vert and got 2nd place in street both 2009 and 2010 (Crazy!)
2009 Winner Ben Hatchell
1986 Winner Mike Cresini…although judging by the limited MC footage I kinda feel like Jeff Jones got robbed.
Also Check out John Fudala’s channel Egg…that was properly done.

567: We will walk! All over You!
April 15, 2010
Weepy turned me on to a lot of music and by turning on I mean looking the other way while he was manning the register at Tower Records NYC….Ah the sins of our youth…I grabbed this cassette on a Thrash Metal whim I believe Hallow’s eve, Man ‘O’ War , “Them” and Fast as a Shark were among that days haul. It was crazy to find out later that Overkill drummer Rat Skates was a Barn Local. Man I wore this tape out. Sorry metallica but 87 belonged to [En-Jay] ….too cool.
PS …Feel free to sign up for the Newsletter. I have some upcoming contests that I will be running exclusively through the list and it is a great opportunity to share some upcoming ideas and discuss things more privately.
Thanks: Join Us!!

Ain’t no job too big or small,
Just one sweep of the wreckin’ ball.
Put ‘em up, we’ll knock ‘em down,
Or knock ‘em up, then leave town.
Demolition of the mind.
Desolation, left behind.
Light the fuse, dynamite.
Light the sky! in the night!!!
We will walk!
All over you!
‘Cause we are!
The wreckin’! Wreckin’ crew!!!
We are the wreckin’ crew.
Wreckin’ crew!!!
We are the wreckin’ crew.
Destruction is a way life.
Destruction, mayhem, havoc, strife.
Crack a smile, here the sound.
Watch ‘em crumble to the ground.
Innocence ain’t no excuse,
Slip your neck inside the noose.
Pay in blood I demand,
The wreckin’ crew is outta hand.
We’ll wreck your neck!
Wreckin’ crew!
Get wrecked!
Turn to ashes, turn to dust.
We’re the ones that you can trust.
Evil smile, wicked grin,
Tear it down, begin to sin.
Think that you will end it all,
There’s no one left to ball or call.
When there ain’t nothin’ left to do,
Call upon, the wreckin’ crew!
We’ll wreck your neck!
Wreckin’ crew!
Yer wreck!
Ah! Wreckin’ crew!
Wreck! Wreck!

565: The House of Steam’s Skatenginerds presents…SCIENCE!!
April 14, 2010
Thanks to pvd wiki!
So Dave Padulo drained his backyard pool and discovered the transitions were just too tight to get any Tony Alva NJ Fantasy Pool Skate Camp Sessions going….Pity really. We have a bit of a behind the scenes daily/weekly email thread going on here at THOS and when he Dave announced he could not imagine how tight the transitions were I said “Hold on” no need to imagine…this is Science! We cant manage what we cant measure! What would DaVinci think ….so empowered by google we now know the following:
Did some field work when I got home today on the tranny formula. The pool in the back yard isn’t a pure transition like a man made ramp so it’s hard to get that exact measurement of “h”. But depending on how you put the yardstick down it’s some where between 3.5 inches and 4.25 inches and that translates to a tranny that’s around 3.5 to 4 feet…that’s pretty tight.
I also checked out how the formula worked on the quarter pipe in the drive way that I know to be a 7 ft tranny that I cut. The formula suggested it was a 7.25 ft tranny based on a 1.875 inch measurement. Pretty close. although hard to estimate the human error component
Pool h (Inches) = 3.5 3.75 4 4.25 Transition (Feet) 4.00 3.76 3.54 3.35 Quarter Pipe h (Inches) = 1.875 Transition (Feet) 7.28
Dave padulo
(For those of you who are interested Jeff Roenning is launching an IPhone app so you can make these calculations on the fly)… (Seriously he is!)
So a further calculation can now be made were by:
T= Transition in Feet
D= Disappointment level after draining pool.
If T<3 feet, Then in any formula D=Pretty Frackin disappointing.
